Santa Monica English Country Garden

For this Santa Monica Tudor-style house, a traditional front lawn was transformed into a flower-filled meadow. Apart from its beauty, the meadow is a significant water-saving feature, as turf is notoriously thirsty.

Layers of flowering shrubs, perennials and grasses provide a constantly changing panorama throughout the seasons. California natives, such as manzanitas and sundrops, are mixed with Australian, South African and South American plants such as conebush, spider flower, and Peruvian lily. Small cape rushes add both textural interest and unusual flowers.

Other water-wise elements include a rain garden, which captures stormwater in the winter for the mature and deep-rooted deodar cedar street tree, and a permeable driveway.
